Questions about Usage of ProjectForum for Stephanie

Hi Stephanie!
Purpose: This page is a means to deliver questions and getting answers from to KIT about using Project Forum.
It also acts as a repository for that knowledge.

IanM: Stephanie, what do you think of this idea? I put in hourly notifications - and would intend this page only to be used by Michelle and I. Happy to go back to email and phone of course.
Ian, I think this is a great idea. Happy to receive hourly notifications.

IanM: Couple of Qn's for Stephanie.

1) What do the links in the TOC do? They are highlighted like links. Do they cause a jump to the discussion if there are lots of discussion items on the page and it is long?
Yes the links in the TOC jump down to the discussion item on the page when the list becomes long.

2) Why does each login ID have a link to an empty page - can this be used to leave a message about the person who has logged in?
These empty pages are intended to be profile pages so that when when people post comments on pages, it will be automatically linked to by clicking on the login ID.
It could be used to leave an individual message to the person. They could then track changes to the page as required. Alternatively, email could be used for this.

3) Is there a nugget of code we can include on each page to skip to the bottom, even if it means turning on html? Because we are now posting at the bottom and it saves scrolling down to the new stuff
We don't recommend turning on HTML as it opens up security risks. I will investigate this though.

The best option is to place posted comments at the top of page. Use comments code to ensure comments do not appear above the introductory text in a page.

IanM: Michelle, I won't put a direct link to this page, but you can get to it by going to the ISSS Home page, then typing "Stephanie" in the Find box at the top right. Doesn't seem to find the page if you are down in one of the projects.

IanM: Stephanie, I was just making a minor change, but I might as well make this a couple of questions about Track Changes.

1) I am getting email notifications that ISSS has changed, but I can't see that I have set any global notification for that. Is there some sort of default that I get notified?

eg: "Changes have been made to the ProjectForum forum Integrated Smart Sensing Systems.

Go to the forum: http://dpi.projectforum.com/isss/"
Tracking changes to the group will produce the above email notification. To receive these notifications, manual subscription is required. It is recommended to track changes to individual pages such as discussion forum topics.

2) When you track changes of a group, say ISSS, does a change down in one of the projects trigger a notification email? Or is it only of pages at the top level of the Group?
When you track chages to a group, changes that occur in a project do not trigger an email notification. If you want to track changes to a project, subscribe via the Track Changes page in the Project itself.

stephanie: Ian, I've subscribed Karen to track changes to this page as well so she can field any questions in my absence.

IanM: On our ISSS team page we have listed our team members. I wanted to be able to click on the name to link to the default page created for each user/visitor. If I use an explicit page reference (http:/dpi.projectforum.com/isss/##) then I can put the name in as a link, but when you click on it, it opens a new page in my Firefox browser. I suppose this is not an issue on IE because it only has one window. Thinking about this, it is probably too specific to worry about. Still, is there another way to use the page title in text to make the text a link?
There is no way to change the name of a page when you link to it. You can either change your login to Ian McCauley or link to your profile with your username IanM.
Using an explicit page reference causes a new window to be opened. To force a link to be opened in the same window in Firefox, go to Tools, Options and under the tab section there are options to do this.

stephanie: Hi Ian and Michelle. Just want to touch base to see how you're going with the use of ProjectForum. Are there any issues?

Posted at Sep 07/2006 02:38PM:
IanM: Hi Stephanie, thanks for the interest. We are going pretty well with using the forum software, and are fairly comfortable with our structure. Several of us are using the forum reasonably frequently, but we have not made the strong one on one or formal training effort to get the others in the team up to a level of comfort in using it. Then we also have to see how the usage and fits in with the group culture/dynamic. I expect we will move a bit more in that direction in the next month.

IanM: Stephanie, I have put myself up for email notification for any group changes. I have not not received any email notifications for the last few times I have altered any site pages. Are we sure notifications are still working?

Hmm... I am getting page notifications by email for the pages I have registered, so clearly that is working. Maybe I misunderstand what notifications I can get for the whole site. So what should I do if I want a daily email if anyone has changed anything on the ISSS site?

More emails have come in. One does refer to the whole site, so this time it seems to have worked ... but I was pretty sure I made changes the other day, and did not get an email notification. Perhaps I'd better investigate further.

Posted at Sep 21/2006 10:01AM:
stephanie: Ian, I have been receiving email notifications of changes to other groups. I also received an email notification of the change you made to this page. I will conduct some testing on your site and follow up with you.

Posted at Sep 21/2006 10:05AM:
IanM: Looking into it a bit further, the post I made was on the news page http://dpi.projectforum.com/isssadmin/105, and that is within a project. I haven'nt marked that group/project (or the page) for notifications - so that is presumably why there was no notification. But by registering for notifications at the highest level in ISSS I would have expected even changes at the group level to be notified - or do I have to register for each group. (hope I am using the correct terminology here group=project?)

stephanie: As discussed, if you wish to receive email notification of changes within a project, you need to track changes for each project individually. Tracking changes at the group level does not include changes at the project level.
